This book teaches children five hundred Chinese characters that. It is divided into seven parts: (1) Learn words through pictograph, (2) Learning words through pictures, (3) Learn words through components of a word (with Pinyin), (4) Learn words through radicals, (5) learn words through phrases (with Pinyin), (6) Learn new words (with Pinyin), (7) Recognize words through reading (12 short stories). Each character is presented with a photo image as well as a description explaining its origin. It also introduces radicals and word combinations. 本书既是多位幼教专家通过对学前儿童识字心理的研究，结合小学课堂的教学实践，总结创新的一套基础字识读新方法。经过反复筛选和试用，选出儿童常用基础字1000个，其中基础字（一）500个，基础字（二）500个。这1000个字不仅包括儿童生活和读物中的常用字，还包含了人教社小学一年级语文课本第一册的所有生字。由于筛选的这些常用汉字是儿童经常使用和接触的，孩子很容易理解。认识这些常用汉字后再对应阅读本书的童话故事。由于每一篇童话故事都是用前面学过的汉字写成，所以，孩子学习生字的成绩就会在童话阅读中立竿见影地显现出来。这不仅巩固了孩子的识字能力，而且提高了孩子的识字阅读兴趣。从而使孩子得到一种自我成就感，激发学习兴趣，打下自主学习的良好基础。此外，根据儿童认知的教育原理和接受能力，该书还选择形式多样的识字方法，如看图识字、识量词认生字、组字识字、识部首认生字、认识词语等，帮助孩子轻松愉快地理解字意和字理。
