Elementary Chinese: Learning through is an introductory program that introduces Chinese language and culture to secondary school students in English-speaking countries and regions worldwide. This series consists of four components (Textbook, Lab Manual and Test Bank) that are design to teach the Chinese pronunciation system, character production procedure, about 600 characters, basic sentence structures and a variety of topics in Chinese culture. It intends to help students reach the Novice High or Intermediate-Low levels of listening, speaking, reading and writing on the measurement of “Proficiency Guidelines” identified by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Language. Texts and vocabulary lists are in simplified and traditional characters and English, grammar and exercises are in simplified characters and English.

本书是一套教授中国语言和文化的基础教材，适用于全世界讲英语的国家和地区初中及高等中学中文教学。这套教材由四个部分组成：课本、作业册、电教课本及考试库。本套教材的教学目的是指导学生学会中文发音、汉字书写方法、六百个左右汉字、基础语法结构及题材广泛的中国文化知识。学习完这套教材学生的汉语听、说、读、写能力应达到美国外语教师协会规定的“高等初级或低等中级”水平。课文及生词简繁体，语法练习简体。
