One of only two ballets that was on stage in China during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), Red Detachment of Women (Hong Se Niang Zi Jun) was popular for its beautiful ballet dances and its story of courageous women in the red army! This ballet chronicles women in Hai Nan, who had been at the lowest social order during the first revolutionary war. These women threw off their shackles, picked up weapons, and joined the Red Army, becoming renowned Red Army Women Warriors.
