Nian is monster. It's head looks like dragon; and body looks like crocodile. It lives at the bottom of the sea; and will not wake up until the 12th full moon of the year. When it gets on the land, it will eat every creature it sees.

On the day that Nian wakes up, the head of the village takes all the villagers out off the village to run away from Nian. However, Granny Ding and her grandson fail to catch up with the villagers.They stayed at home, hoping that Nian doesn't find them...

「年」是一种头像龙、身体硬如鳄鱼的可怕猛兽。它平常在海底沉睡着，一直睡到十二次的圆月之后，才会醒过来，从海里爬到陆地上来找东西吃。不管是人还是动物，只要被它看见，都会被它吃进肚子。

这一天，北风呼呼，天气冷得不得了。村长张开了喉咙大喊︰「年要来啦！快走啊！」村长一面大喊，一面赶紧带着全村的人往山上避难。住在村子东边的丁婆婆和小孙子赶不及，只好躲在家裡，希望能平安渡过危险……
