A New Chinese Course is a series of Chinese textbooks designed for beginning learners of Chinese language. Altogether there are four volumes, each of which includes one textbook and one workbook. Adopting the principle of progressive learning, it starts from Chinese phonetics, progresses gradually to dialogue training, then to short articles. The whole series cover 3,000 commonly used words, 1,500 commonly used Chinese characters, more than 300 grammar points, 243 functional items, and 430 functional points. Each lesson centers on 4 to 8 functional items to train students' communication abilities in Chinese. Each setting is set in a foreign country, with topics that bring relevance to students' lives. Five topics such as the Individual, Family, School, Friends, and Society are discussed in each volume. At the end of each textbook, in the appendix, additional vocabulary lists, grammar rules and chapter reviews can be found. Matching Workbooks are available.
