The tangram (Chinese: 七巧板 literally "seven boards of skill") is a puzzle that reinforces geometric concepts. This Chinese cultural game traditionally consists of seven flat shapes, called tans. These seven geometric pieces include one square, five triangles and one parallelogram. To play the game, the pieces are put together to form more complex shapes including animals and other objects. The objective of the puzzle is to form a specific shape (given only in outline or silhouette) using all seven pieces, which may not overlap. The tangram originated in China almost 4,000 years ago, and continues to be one of the most popular dissection puzzles in the world today.
